As if it was not complicated enough to choose an LED grow light, LED manufacturers use different specifications to describe their lights. The power level of LED grow lights is often advertised as either the amount of “wall watts” consumed (energy drawn from an electrical outlet), the number of LEDs in the light multiplied by their maximum allowable power, or some other totally made up number.

For example, an LED grow light with 100 3-watt emitters that uses 200 wall watts could be advertised as either a 200- or 300-watt LED grow light. Wall watts are the most reliable measure of LED grow light power levels—or at least the most important when it comes to not overloading an electric circuit.

Why does this matter? Most of the time, it doesn’t—your garden doesn’t care what yardstick the manufacturer uses in a marketing pitch. Be sure to ask the manufacturer what method is use to describe the power level of a specific light so you can plan accordingly.
